Planning approval for Rafael Vinoly's new visual arts facility
A new cultural landmark is to appear in Colchester in Oct. 2007.
This arts facility called firstsite:newsite has been planned upon the success of an existing gallery, firstsite, which is currently based in a Georgian Townhouse, and expected to be an important catalyst for the £100million regeneration plan for Colchester's St Botolph's quarter.
The U.S. and London based architect Rafael Vinoly adopted a slender crescent shape to draw out the potential of the site, also focusing on natural light and sweeping views of the adjacent park. It features multiple entrances that enable an easy access to exterior programme, and flexible design aiming for the interaction between visitors and artists. It will contain exhibition space, conferencing and screening rooms, retail, and administration facilities.
Construction is due to commence shortly.
