Malmoe welcomes the bubble

A glass bubble situated in one of the most barren environments in Sweden, has been set up. Named GlassBubble, the 890 m³ structure contains tropical plants which provide a stark contrast to the urban areas of Malmö in Sweden. It is situated in the middle of a courtyard where it is at the mercy of salty sea winds in which very little plants would survive. The bubble will be illuminated at night for both the benefit of the plants inside and also for the residents who live nearby who can congregate there.

The bubble is part of a major construction boom for the city of Malmö which saw the construction of a tower named the Turning Torso which won the Emporis Skyscraper Award 2005 which stands to the rear of the bubble.

The glasshouse was completed in February 2006 however the plants were installed in March and April. This gave adequate time for them to get used to the surroundings before its opening in June. The overall cost of the structure has been kept secret by the developers, GORA.
