Grimshaw wins competition in Milan to work on Cesar Pelli masterplan

Grimshaw’s Fashion and Design Events Building will anchor the eastern edge of Cesar Pelli’s masterplan in Garibaldi Repubblica, addressing both the major road-access route and the 92,000sqm public park to the north.

The concept takes as its starting point a simple ‘black box’, which forms the core of the building; the events hall needs to be strictly orthogonal to allow exhibitors the freedom to construct their own temporary worlds. This functional core is loosely wrapped, as though draped with fabric, in a metal skin that follows the shape of the site, creating something of an urban sculpture.
