What is it with twisted skyscrapers?

Any architecural analyst can see that the new wave of skyscrapers involves numerous twisting designs. The most notable is the Turning Torso in Malmo, Sweden of 190 metres (623 feet) with 54 stories. This tower is now recognisable as being the current tallest tower which twists a full 90ยบ.

If you just read that sentence carefully, you would notice that the word current is used. This is because a new tower in Dubai called Infinity Tower is set to smash this record. Located in the Dubai Marina, the 330 metre (1,083 ft) tall tower will be one of the most recognisable buildings in Dubai and possibly the world.

But there is an even more high profile tower set to change the skyline of one of the world's most popular cities. The Fordham Spire will dominate the Chicago skyline with it's sleek light blue facade. Rising like a pillar of smoke, twisting, it will become the tallest building in America, beating the Freedom Tower in New York when completed.

It doesn't stop there. Not by any stretch. RMJM have been chosen to design a new skyscraper for Moscow and the latest renderings show a twisting building which is short however twists at an immense angle.

There will be more twisted skyscraper proposals to come for definite. Maybe this is the beginning of a new era.
