New Malmo Tower To Beat Turning Torso Record

The SSM company in Sweden is leading a development for what could be the tallest building in Malmo and the tallest all residential building in Europe trumping the existing Turning Torso, also in Malmo. The 65 floor skyscraper will reach 200 metres and contain 350 residential apartments in a single monolithic block.

It has been designed by Swedish architect Gert Wingårdh. There is no name for the building yet although the developer is holding a competition to try and decide with the inspiration of the Swedish public. The site of the scheme is on an abandoned Ericsson phone factory at Telephonplan next to the E4 motorway on the outskirts of Malmo.

The city has a long tradition of building on fringe sites that mark its boundary rather than clustering them in the centre, a formula that has worked successfully with the Turning Torso, and that is the logic behind the placing of this tower too.

There are plans for numerous other developments in the area, in all about 2000 residential units are expected to be built in this scheme and nearby ones on the southwestern edge of the city although this is the only true tall building proposed for the area.

The project has yet to be approved but the developer hopes that once it gets the thumbs up construction can be completed by 2010.
